Omega-3 fatty acids are vital for every stage of life. We need to consume sufficient Omega 3's to enjoy stable emotional health, cognitive and physical performance, including the well-being and development of our brain cells, eyes, heart, muscles, skin and connective tissues/joints.
However, most western diets only contain one kind of Omega 3 called ALA which is present in most plant oils, yet they do not contain any of the beneficial long-chain Omega 3’s called EPA and DHA because these two omegas are generally only obtained when we eat oily marine fish.
Our bodies are able to produce some EPA and DHA from ALA we eat, but only in limited amounts and for this reason the scientific community have advised we should eat fish or take a supplement containing EPA and DHA daily to keep healthy.
It’s widely accepted that we should consume at least 250mg to 500mg EPA and DHA Omegas daily (combined), for a typical healthy adult(*), this equates to a meal of oily fish daily. But in most cases we do not ingest any of these two omegas because of the difficulty in eating fish on a daily basis. That is why taking an omega 3 supplement with EPA and DHA is so important. One softgel capsule of SUPER OMEGA contains 750mg of EPA and DHA combined (450mg EPA and 300mg DHA) from purified fish oil, free of environmental pollutants.
*this does not include special needs individuals that may have an added need for extra omega 3 EPA and DHA such as:
- Active sports man or woman
- Recovering from head injury
- Emotional stress
- Cognitive decline
Some back ground info on Omega fatty acids:
Benefits of consuming more EPA and DHA omega fatty acids are vast, at the start, the primary effect of Omega 3 is reducing cellular inflammation which then has a cascade of other positive effects...
Emotional health/Depression and mental disorders: EPA and DHA omega fatty acids are present in the brain and low brain levels of these fats have repeatedly been linked to individuals that suffer from depression, anxiety and mood disorders. It’s often been noted that the fish eating nations of the world have low rates of depression, because it appears that fish oils (notably the EPA and DHA content) increase dopamine production/activity in the brain.
Omega 3 supplementation in rats has been shown to increase dopamine levels by 40% and increase binding sites for dopamine in the brain, making the Omega 3 EPA and DHA a potent natural treatment and prevention of depressive and other psychiatric disorders.
Concentration, Cognitive functions and brain performance: the EPA and DHA omega fatty acids readily enter the brain and interact with cell membranes and signalling as well as brain development. The effect of Omegas on alleviating cellular inflammation is often considered it’s main role in boosting brain function.
Physical performance: Omega 3's seems to behave as a metabolic fuel partitioner, up regulating the activity of enzymes that allow the body to use of fat as a preferred source of fuel while also slowing down the activity of the enzymes that are responsible for fat generation. This results in fat been burned for energy during exercise while also limiting the regeneration of new fat cells, making Omega 3's a very powerful physical performance booster and weight loss aid.
Muscle growth: Omega 3 fatty acids increase protein synthesis and prime our bodies for muscle growth. This happens because a higher level of omega 3's make our muscle cells more responsive to the actions of the anabolic hormone insulin and amino acids which are present in our blood after we eat a protein meal or drink a protein shake like whey protein.
Maintain muscle mass/ reducing muscle atrophy: Omega 3's help reduce muscle–loss from disuse because they naturally increase protein synthesis, which helps to build and repair muscle. If you are injured and unable to train a specific muscle or you are unable to make it to the gym, the muscle will start to atrophy (get smaller) from lack of use. However, a study based on young female athletes with a leg immobilized in a knee brace for 2 weeks (to mimic injury) found that consuming 5g of Omega 3's daily resulted in zero loss of leg muscle at the end of the study, while those who received a placebo of sunflower oil had their leg muscle mass and volume decrease by 6%.
Other key protective effects of Omega 3 fatty acids include: protecting eye sight from degeneration with age, protecting the heart and reducing risk of stroke.
